The Sea
to Sea 2013 Bike Tour is a nine-week, 3,900-mile cycling trek across North
America designed to raise awareness and funds in support of those living in
poverty around the world. The tour is hosted by the Reformed Church in America,
Partners Worldwide, and World Renew. Last done in 2008, Sea to Sea riders then raised over 2.5 million dollars. The
goal for this year is that over 400 riders will raise over 5 million and
continue the tradition of Sea to Sea being the largest transcontinental
fundraising bike tour in North America.
The tour is a unique
opportunity to take God’s message of hope to this world of overwhelming poverty.
Imagine the witness of hundreds of riders traveling through the countryside,
towns and cities of North America. Hour after hour people in their cars, in
restaurants, gas stations and shops will see these riders and be touched and
called to action by their story of the fight against poverty.
I have answered this call
to action by registering for one week of the tour, from July 29-August 3. Ruth
and I have spent time in prayer and discussed this with many of you before
accepting this responsibility. Today, we are confident we can commit to my time
away from our business during its busiest time, the physical challenge of
cycling 447 miles over 6 days (and sleeping in a tent overnight,) and the
effort needed to reach my fundraising goal of $2500. This is an exciting
opportunity to do something positive in this world that often seems to be a
very negative place.
I invite you to join in
this positive effort by supporting the tour. More information about the how
money raised will be used is available at www.seatosea.org . In the spirit of putting my money where my mouth is,
Ruth and I have committed to match any contributions made in my name until my
goal of $2500 is reached. I enjoy bicycling so much I feel I should be paying
my way, so to speak. So the impact of your donation will be doubled from the
start. As of today, I am 47% of the way towards
the goal. Just go online to my donation page in order to make a contribution.
Thanks to all of you who
will be thinking and praying with us as together we take this small step. And
thanks to those who can donate.
Herb Boven
